President’s Message – Happy New Year!!!

We welcome the New Year and wish for all that 2013 may be a special year filled with good health, great friendships and much happiness. We thank you for your continued support of our varied events, interest groups and scholarship activities and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. We especially want to thank Diane Stuart, Barbara & John Elam, Carol & Bill Weissert and Dian & Chas LaTour for their dedicated work in making the Holiday Party at Dorothy B. Oven Park such a wonderful success. More than 100 attended this wonderful evening. We also thank all who brought delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts for members to enjoy. We began the 2013 with a wonderfully successful Bowlegs 5k Run & 1 Mile walk on Saturday the 5th. The weather was perfect. We had about 140 enthusiastic runners and walkers. We thank Larry Giunipero, who has worked this race with me for 28 out of the 29 years, and Bill Hillison, who began helping not long after us. With the advent of the Bowlegs Brunch, now in its 9th year, many more Faculty Club members attend and either walk, run or volunteer. We thank you, and our scholarship recipients thank you. Two of them are continuing this spring. We are still searching for a few more needy students. We thank you for your generous donations with your membership and thank Anthony’s Wood Fire Grill and High Performance Magnetics for their generous sponsorship. We also thank Lucy Ho’s Azu and Masa, Renegade Grill, Shaw’s Athletics and Jimmy John’s for their wonderful gift certificates. These gift certificates are a great draw to the runners and walkers.

We encourage you to join us for the annual Chinese New Year’s celebration at Lucy Ho’s Azu on Sunday, January 27, followed by a festive Mardi Gras at the home of Linda & Bob Clickner on Saturday, February 9. On Tuesday, February 26, we will head to the American Legion Hall at Lake Ella to hold a Winter Dance, listening and dancing to the lively Tallahassee Swing Band.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
First of all, a great big thank you to all who came and enjoyed the extremely successful Welcoming Reception held on Wednesday, September 12. It is always risky to send thanks and risk forgetting somebody but some must be mentioned. Thank you to Pete Cottrell for the great work with all the beverages and with securing Heather and Jason’s help as bartenders. Their help throughout the evening was invaluable. Other grateful thanks go to Jan flake, Denise Ellingson, Barbara Elam and Linda & Bob Clickner for all that hard and arduous work in setting up the tables and chairs and later disassembling the place. That was quite a job. The Garden Center was like a beehive with members helping with the clean-up in every room. Thanks also to our dedicated photographer Neil Charness, and a huge thank you to all the many members, who brought such delicacies for us to enjoy. Another thanks must go to Fred Leysieffer and Calvin Zongker for manning the membership table throughout the gathering and to Diane Olsen and Natholyn Harris for working with the scholarship recipients.

Three of our six scholarship recipients were at the reception. They were able to publicly thank us for the financial help. They circulated and really enjoyed meeting the Club members. We enjoyed getting to know these dedicated, older students, who wish to improve their lives.

We look forward to seeing you at the Halloween Party at the festively decorated home of Beth & Neil Charness on Friday, October 26 and at the Holiday Party at Dorothy B. Oven Park on Saturday, December 1. Please make sure to mark your 2013 calendars for the Billy Bowlegs Race and Bowlegs Brunch in Renegade Grill at the Seminole Golf Club on Saturday, January 5. On Sunday, January 27, we will be celebrating the annual Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake, at Lucy Ho’s Azu. Linda & Bob Clickner have offered their home for Mardi Gras for Saturday, February 9. A Winter Dance is planned for Tuesday, February 26 at the American Legion, and we will attend an FSU Circus Dress Rehearsal in late March. We also plan to attend an Open House at FSUs new Aero-propulsion, Mechatronics and Energy Building (AME) at FSUs Southwest Campus.

I welcome you to the 2012-2013 academic year and look forward to serving you again as your president. I hope your summer has been a special and relaxing one. Great plans are in the works for the monthly events while our interest group chairpersons continue their work to engage their members in interesting discussions on books, learning about foreign countries or places in the US, enjoying outdoor pursuits, discussing investments or photography, in speaking foreign languages or in enjoying culinary treats in homes or in restaurants. The interest groups serve as the mainstay of the Club, and we thank the leaders who continue to chair these groups. In our wish for the club membership to grow, please spread the word about our activities and begin by inviting new and current faculty and friends to the Welcoming Reception to be held on Wednesday, September 12 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. to be held at the Tallahassee Garden Center.

Alice B. Nichols Scholarship

The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986. (At the request of the FSU Foundation, the name of the fund remains as stated here.) Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students, who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Five years ago, the board members voted to also add some partial scholarships to part-time students. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful, annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk, we have been able to award one-hundred-and-twenty-seven scholarships during the past seventeen years. We have chosen six students for the fall semester who will each receive $500. We hope to be able to donate another six next spring semester. We thank you for your generous support and hope we can continue to count on it for this worthwhile endeavor particularly during these difficult economic times. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged. Please bring your check to the Welcoming Reception or mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the treasurer, Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.

Annual Welcoming Reception
Wednesday, September 12, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Tallahassee Garden Center, 508 North Calhoun Street

As always, we start the year with our Annual Welcoming Reception to take place this year in the Tallahassee Garden Center located between Calhoun and Gadsden Streets. You can enter the large parking area either from Carolina Street across from Georgia Belle or from Gadsden Street. This event is a wonderful opportunity to visit with old and new friends. You can join or renew your membership and sign up for the many fascinating interest groups. These groups are a great way to get to know each other, and they serve as the mainstay of our Club. Come savor the delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts, in part prepared by members. Please bring new faculty and friends and encourage current faculty to attend the reception to familiarize them with our organization. Also come meet and welcome our scholarship recipients. There is a ramp at the back of the house for easy access.

Several of your board members will be chairing this event. If you have special delicacies you would like to share with us, it will be much appreciated. Please e-mail Annelise Leysieffer at aleysieffer@gmail.com or call her at 893-1272 with offers to bring food, to volunteer or if you have any questions.

President’s Message

Dear All,

As I am approaching the end of my term as your president, I feel so blessed to have been able to be part of this wonderful club that has been serving our beloved faculty and friends for so many years. I would like to encourage everyone to invite their friends to join this fabulous club. We have many interest groups that continue to attract old and new members. We added several new members this year, but for this wonderful club to grow, we must all participate to the best of our ability. We also have added several interest groups like the New Digital Photography group.

This year, our scholarship fund has increased and $7,200 was paid out in the fall and spring twice to each of our six students. The race at Bowlegs netted our club $2,400 in revenue. We had such a good year with so many memorable activities that everyone enjoyed. Our Fall Welcoming Reception at the Brokaw-McDougall House was such a success and brought so many old and new members together. Then the Halloween Party followed at the Charness’ home, a party they graciously host year after year. The Holiday Party was even better attended than ever. The Chinese New Year, held at Azu, brought many special dishes never served before and impressed so many of our members. The get-together continued at the Valentine Dance at the American legion Hall by Lake Ella followed by Mardi Gras, an evening we all look forward to at the Elam’s house where Barb serves us her out-of-this-world delicious jambalaya. As you can see, this club is great and dear to all of us. We encourage participation and suggestions from all. Let’s keep our fellowship moving forward.

Let’s give our support to the upcoming President for the 6th time, Annelise Leysieffer. I would not be able to serve without her true help. I could not think of anyone else right now, who is available and has the commitment for this position except Annelise.

I leave with great memories and a promise to continue my participation to this fabulous club. Please get involved. We need each and every one of you to participate and recruit member(s) to join this fabulous club we all so love and belong to. Thank you for this opportunity to be part of your life, and we hope to see you all in all our gatherings and fund raising venues.

Happy New Year!!!

We welcome the New Year and wish for all that 2012 may be a special year filled with good health, great friendships and much happiness. We thank you for your continued support of our varied events, interest groups and scholarship activities and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. We especially want to thank Josephine Ang, Barbara Elam, Diane Stuart, Carol & Bill Weissert and Dian & Charles LaTour for their dedicated work in making the Holiday Party at Dorothy B. Oven Park such a wonderful success. More than 100 attended making this our best Holiday Party in years. We also thank all who brought delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts for members to share. We began the 2012 with a wonderfully successful Bowlegs 5k Run & 1 Mile walk on Saturday the 7th. The weather was perfect, and we had about 180 runners and walkers, making this our best attended Bowlegs possibly ever. We thank Larry Giunipero, who began this race in 1985 together with Leitch Wright, and Bill Hillison, who began helping not many years later. With the advent of the Bowlegs Brunch, now in its 8th year, many more Faculty Club members attend and either walk, run or volunteer. We thank you, and our scholarship recipients thank you. All six recipients are continuing full time this spring semester with the club awarding them a total of $7,200 this year, which is more than we have ever given out in any given year. We thank you for your generous donations with your membership and thank Anthony’s Wood Fire Grill and High Performance Magnetics for their generous sponsorship. We also thank AZU, MASA, Renegade Grill and Shaw’s Athletics for their wonderful gift certificates. These gift certificates are a great draw to the runners and walkers. We furthermore thank Brian Bachman for donating the mugs this year for this good cause

We encourage you to join us for another delicious Chinese New Year’s celebration at Lucy Ho’s Azu on Sunday, January 29. Thank you all, especially to those who helped and brought those delicious foods to the reception. Thank you especially to all those who helped to set up and cleaned up the place.
President’s Message

Welcome to the 85th year of the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU. Our organization has been serving the FSU community since 1926! We have grown from mainly a group of faculty spouses to plan social events, such as welcoming new faculty, to a now full functioning association of all faculty (retired or active), their spouses and friends, with regularly scheduled social activities, as well as fund-raising activities to provide scholarships for returning students at the university.

One of the strengths of our organization is the large selection of activities we offer to our members. I thank those who have served as chairpersons of various interest groups for their continuous generosity and leadership through all these years. We truly could not be where we are without you in making these interest groups working like clockwork. I thank our most recent past president, Pete Cottrell, for all his hard work and making this transition easy for me to take over. I thank all the board members for volunteering their time in numerous brainstorming and planning sessions to keep the club going. We want Annelise and Fred Leysieffer to know that they are very much appreciated for all these many years of volunteer work. Annelise has particularly given so much devotion, time and energy! Our group activities are always in her agenda even as she was having both of her knees replaced at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. I know this would put a smile in everybody’s face. By witnessing this very moving experience with Annelise, I cannot help but be inspired. Annelise’s passion to keep the club going inspired all of us to give our best in growing this wonderful club that was started by our club members over 85 years ago!

Several interest groups run year round. We offer interest groups that are truly worthwhile for you or your friends to join. They are all chaired and assisted by wonderful members. A new Digital Photography Group is currently being formed, and if you can think of a new interest group that may attract existing and new members to sign up, please send me the suggestion, and we will surely discuss it at our next meeting. Membership dues are low, and we offer tremendous fun, educational value through interest groups and the opportunity to be with people with varied experiences and skills to share.

Not only do we have these interest groups that are worth joining, we have receptions and group tours like we just had this past year. We have our traditional Fall Reception, this year held at the Brokaw-McDougall House, and the Annual Christmas Holiday reception at the Dorothy B. Oven Park. We will dine at Azu during the Chinese New Year celebration and participate in the fund-raising Billy Bowlegs 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk. Last year, we toured the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Goodwood Museum and Gardens. I had fun at the Mardi Gras party held at the Elam’s house and at the Halloween party held at Neil and Beth Charness’ home.

I would also like to thank Calvin Zongker for again taking over as our dedicated treasurer as well as thank the many board members, who continue to work hard for this wonderful organization. There are so many devoted members all through these years who have remained active in volunteering their time and continued support. Thank you all again – to those who have contributed. You know who you are, as I could not mention you all.

Our membership needs to grow. Please try to get faculty or friends of FSU to join. It is such a great feeling to belong to such a wonderful organization. It would not take much. If every member can just bring one friend to one of our activities, or interest group meetings, together, we can accomplish a lot in recruiting new members.

I am privileged and honored to be your president. I understand that the tenure of my service is only a year as your vice president and another year as president, but the memories will linger on for as long as I live. I shall look forward to working with Jan Flake, our incoming Vice President, who will be in charge of our programs. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. Again, I welcome each and every one of you, and I wish you all a very happy and productive year.

Sincerely, Josephine Ang

SCHOLARSHIP

The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986. (At the request of the FSU Foundation, the name of the fund remains as stated here.) Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Four years ago, the board members voted to also add some partial scholarships to part-time students. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful, annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk, we have been able to award one-hundred-and-fifteen scholarships during the past sixteen years. We will be giving six $600 scholarships this fall semester with more in the spring and hope we can continue to count on your support for this worthwhile endeavor. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted. Please mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the Treasurer, Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.
