October 1998 Newsletter

President’s Message
On September 3rd, thirty people gathered at Lucy Ho’s for a wonderful meal and discussion led by our Chinese guests from Beijing who were here lecturing at the Oceanography department by the invitation of Jack Winchester.  Current events, pollution, research and social issues were lively topics.

The University Club is off to a great start because the next evening on September 4th, at least 125 members and friends gathered, despite Hurricane Earl, at the pleasant and elegant President’s box in the University Center to renew old friendships and to meet new faculty at our Annual Welcoming Reception.  All three scholarship recipients were introduced, and we visited with them.   Many thanks to Homer Ooten, our new Vice President, and to all who helped make this evening such a success by providing food, flowers and manning the interest group tables.  A special thanks to all of those members who called and invited our new faculty!!! Around 60 people joined us for a very nice Newcomers’ party on September 25th.  Warm thanks go to Jehanne and Zach Fisk for hosting it at their house.  I would like to also recognize all the efforts of Kathy and Bill Landing as they organized the party, contacted newcomers and served the drinks.  Many thanks also to our own Faculty Jazz and Blues  Band, in which Bill plays, who entertained us superbly and to all the people who provided the refreshments.
Thanks to Provost Larry  Abele for hosting our Fall Wednesday  Social September 9th in the new Pepper Building lobby.
There are many activities planned for this year—including our Halloween Costume and Chili Party at Neddy and DeWitt Sumners coming up October 29th. After that will be the FSU Opera with “Don Giovanni” on November 13th followed by the  the Holiday Reception on December 4th!!!!!  If you haven’t joined yet, send your dues to Cindy Wise so you can be included with the membership list coming in the next newsletter.
