October 1999 Newsletter

President’s Message
The 1999-2000 academic year is “under way” in great fashion, with two Super Events. On September 10, some 200 past and present members gathered in Beth Moor Lounge in the Longmire Building on the FSU campus for the University Club’s Annual Welcoming Reception. Special guests, invited by Vice President Marietta Schroeder and Asst. Vice President Beth Wright, were past presidents of the University Club, with 20 of these “honorees” being present, representing the University Club as far back as 1949. Each was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a copy of Femina Perfecta–The Genesis of Florida State University, signed by the author Robin Sellers, who was in attendance. One of our scholarship recipients Susan Hanrahan was present and was introduced to the attendees. We are grateful for all donations and activities which lead to scholarship funding.
Special thanks are extended to Marietta Schroeder, to Beth Wright and to the event chair, Anneliese Doherty and her committee who assured that every detail was handled with high standards of expertise. Adding to the atmosphere was the wonderful piano music provided by Chris Hart. My personal thanks are extended to Mr. Hart and to each member who brought the wide variety of hors d’œuvres, and otherwise participated in making this event a “watermark” in the history of the University Club.
On September 24, the Newcomer’s “Wine and Cheese party” was held at the home of Zach and Jehanne Fisk. This Great Party, chaired by Bill and Kathy Landing, was enjoyed by some 110 new faculty, board members, and friends of FSU. Our own faculty Blue’s Boys Band and Equal Time Barber Shop Quartet entertained with extraordinary music. The Blue’s Boys Band consisted of Bill Landing, Walter Kelleher, Steve Van Gorder, Jeff Owens, Larry McCraw, Dale Olsen, and Winston Scott. The Equal Time quartet, spearheaded by Woody Wise, also includes Gerry Frost, Donna Lerner, and Bruce Bickley. We are indebted to the Fisks for hosting the party, and to those who provided the hors d’œuvres and beverages.
I take this opportunity to pay special thanks to Annelise Leysieffer for her commitment to excellence in keeping track of University Club issues and oordinating the publication of the newsletter. This is an extremely valuable contribution of time.
There are many activities planned for this year. I look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events. If you have not, please send your dues to Ellie Johnson so we can update the membership roster for the next mailing.

Singles

Interest Group

If you are single (widowed, divorced or never married), do not stay at home, join our Singles Group.  We intend to have a variety of delightful activities that the group would enjoy such as: dinners at restaurants and at homes, plays at Little Theater and FSU, concerts at Opperman, tennis at Forest Meadows, maybe ice skating at Tallahassee’s Festival of Lights, beach trips to Alligator Point, and possibly going to the Florida State University’s London Study Center for a week.  The world is our oyster.  Let’s enjoy it with others who share our situation.
The second meeting is at the home of the interest group chair Jane Grosslight at 700 North Ride on Sunday, October 31, 1999 at 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. for a pot luck Halloween dinner.  Come and bring some food and $2.00 for drinks and table supplies.
You are encouraged to bring another single person you know, even if not at the University.  Call 386-4565 and leave a message of how many are coming. Thanks!  Do not miss out on making new friends and partaking of activities you enjoy.
