Fall 2003 Newsletter

Presidents Message

Welcome to the new academic year at Florida State. We hope your summer has been fulfilling and refreshing, and we look forward to seeing you at the exciting variety of monthly functions planned by Ann Libert, our Vice President for programs.

The Faculty & Friends Club, formerly known as the University Club, was established in 1926 by a number of wives of professors to form a social organization. That club was known as the College Dames of FSCW. As changes have occurred on campus, so has the organization with inclusion of men in 1984 to form the University Club of FSU. With the constant confusion caused by the much newer University Center Club, the Board members felt it prudent to have the membership vote at the Club’s 2003 Annual Meeting to change the name but not the aim of the Club. As stated in the constitution, the purpose of the Club is to create a social environment wherein faculty and administrative staff , professional staff, and retirees of the entire university and their families can meet to exchange ideas and friendship. Through the years, we have expanded that purpose to extend an invitation to friends who support the aims and activities of the Club, and we participate in raising funds for scholarships for returning students.

We look forward to seeing you at the various events including the first ones highlighted in this newsletter. The Benefit Night for the International Center on September 3rd promises to be a wonderful and fun evening followed by the Annual Fall Welcoming Reception on September 8th in Miller Hall. We look forward to welcoming new members to the university community while renewing old friendships. My charge to the current members is to bring new members from your departments to be welcomed into the university community. Welcome back and welcome to an exciting 2003-2004.

THE UNIVERSITY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The current Faculty & Friends Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986. Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Thanks to your generous donations paid with your dues or as memorials, and due to our successful annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run, the Club has been able to award fifty scholarships during the past nine years. We are planning to award five to six during the 2003-2004 academic year. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted. Please mail your check to the treasurer Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee FL 32312 – 2334 with the check still made out to our former name The University Club.

September 3rd Theater and Reception

The Faculty and Friends Club invites you to come and join us at The Tallahassee Little Theatre for the FSU International Center Benefit Night featuring the farcical play “Noises Off”. It will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. The ticket cost is $20 which includes the play and an international reception featuring world cuisines and refreshments. The program also includes a silent auction featuring gift baskets and other items. The event is sponsored by the FSU International Center Friends Board, comprised of distinguished members from the Tallahassee and  the university community .

“Noises Off” (in theatre jargon, referring to the off-stage sound effects) is a farce within a farce . Backstage yelps, wayward plates of sardines, and a lost contact lens add to the catastrophic final rehearsal of “Nothing On”. The audience gets a glimpse of the hysterically funny on and off stage antics. Like Murphy’s Law, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong, and we get to see it all! Join us for fun and help support a very good cause.

Please send checks made out to FSU Foundation to Ann Libert, 3780 E. Millers Bridge Rd., Tallahassee. FL 32312 before August 30th (tel. 668-0059). Please pick-up your tickets at the Box Office that night.
