Fall 2004 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the new academic year at Florida State University. This is going to be a great year for members of the Faculty & Friends Club. Our Vice President Barbara Elam has planned a superb variety of monthly events for us. Read about them on the back page of this newsletter. Several exciting new interest groups are being added to the old favorites that have been in existence for years. The interest groups can be intellectually stimulating or purely social. They offer friendships in small settings and can serve as support groups for our members.

We hope you will take advantage of what the Club has to offer and look forward to seeing you throughout the year, beginning with the joint Welcoming & Newcomers Reception on Friday, September 10. Come, renew friendships, and welcome newcomers to the university community. My charge to all current members is for you to invite and encourage new and current faculty colleagues from your departments to attend this special evening. The Faculty Band “The Polyploidz” will entertain us. Come listen and enjoy while partaking of delicious goodies provided by Club members and sign up for the many interest groups.

The Faculty & Friends Club has been an integral part of campus life since 1926 under a variety of names.  The Club has given us the opportunity to make life-long friendships with members throughout the university community. Through the years, we have expanded the membership to include friends who support the aims and activities of the Club.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 (the name of the fund remains unchanged). Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 mile Walk, the Club has been able to award fifty-six scholarships during the past ten years.  We are planning to award six more during the next academic year.  Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged.  Please mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the treasurer Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.

Joint Fall Welcoming & Newcomers Reception
