October 2007 Newsletter

The September Reception was a great success and a lot of fun. There was much activity around the interest group tables, and many hugs, much visiting and greetings going on throughout the Alumni Center ballroom.

Thanks to Carol Weissert and her committee for all they did and to Jan Thomas for again doing the lovely decorations this year. We are grateful to the members who brought the delicious food and drink and to Tom Hunt from the Alumni Center for all his help and cooperation. It was great to have Cal Zongker with us and thanks to Cal and Fred Leysieffer for manning the dues and membership tables. Neil and Beth Charness did a great job with the slide presentation of our many activities.

Alice Nichols presented 6 scholarships, and all the recipients were introduced. Please read Alice’s article on the scholarships.

Annelise Leysieffer was presented a “Guiding Light” award for all she has done for the club over the past years.

October 27, we again look forward to Barb and John Elam’s Halloween Party. If you haven’t previously attended, come have fun this year. You won’t believe the decorations.

On November 10, we have a field trip to Tall Timbers Research Station. The Beadel Family lived there and many kinds of research and collecting take place on this beautiful property.

I hope that you are enjoying the various events and interest groups. If you have not already done so, please pay your dues. The dues are inexpensive, but are far reaching, and please get a friend involved in this great club. I hope to see you soon.

University Club Scholarship

Alice Nichols sends grateful thanks for all of your cards, visits and prayers during her ordeal in the hospital and at Hospice House. Through it all, Alice has continued her search for new scholarship recipients. Having received several names of highly qualified and deserving part-time students, we have deviated from the norm of usually supporting full-time, undergraduate students thirty years of age or older and have instead given only two full scholarships @ $500 in addition to four @ either $400 or $200. The six recipients attended the Welcoming Reception with their spouses. We hope you got to meet them. They are all extremely grateful for the financial assistance.

Tamara Cowell – senior – majoring in actuarial science. Her baby was born September 19. Mother and child are doing well, and Tamara is planning to take a full course load next semester.

Jeffrey Martin – junior – majoring in physical education. He wants to become a high school coach and wants to be a positive influence on young boys. Both Jeffrey and his wife are students, they work full time and have two children.
James Mogel – senior – majoring in political science and geography. He will graduate in December and plans to begin in a masters’ program in the spring.
Andrea White – junior – majoring in human resources and business management.
We thank all of you for making these scholarships available. Since 1994, we have given out seventy-six full-time scholarships. We encourage donations made as memorials. Sue Edelson and Bert Davis have both recently passed away, and gifts in their memory would be welcome.
