PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
On Saturday, January 19, we had a very successful Billy Bowlegs Run and Brunch in spite of the weather. A very special thanks to Annelise, Bill and Larry for all their hard work and time. They are greatly appreciated, as were all those who helped, walked or ran. Please read Annelise’s article included in this newsletter.
Al Trezza is cutting back on activities to take good care of himself, and Heinz Luebkemann is taking over for Al doing the Restaurant Roulette and working with me on the April 16th Annual Dinner. Don Rapp is taking over the retired faculty liaison duties, and a special thanks to them for taking this on. Al has been doing a great job on these responsibilities for years, and a big load of gratitude is sent his way.
Sunday, February 10th is the LUCY HO’S CHINESE NEW YEAR’S DINNER. The dinner starts at 6:30, with a cash bar at 6. This has always been a very popular club event. The restaurant wants our number by the 5th, so I will get a number from Cal the evening of Tuesday February 5th. This will be our cut-off date. Please send your check for $25 per person to Cal Zongker by February 5 as written on the next page. If you have a question, please call me at 385-8028.

Despite the inclement weather, the Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk was a great success and brought out 121 eager runners and at least eleven walkers. The major fund-raiser for our scholarship fund brought in a record $2,205 this year. We are grateful to all of our members, who participated, and to all who volunteered their time to be part of Billy Bowlegs. Particularly, we thank Larry Giunipero and Bill Hillison for organizing and carrying out the race once again. The brunch at the Renegade Grill, which followed the race, was a high point of the day with 40 attending. We are grateful for Gulf Winds Track Club bestowing Grand Prix status, and we give particular thanks to our three major sponsors Lucy Ho’s Oriental Bistro, Anthony’s Italian Restaurant and Target Copy.

The Satanic Verses, by Sir Salman Rushdie. Selected by our book group to coincide with Rushdie’s appearance (Feb. 22) as part of FSU’s Seven Days of Opening Nights, this early novel was the provocation for the fatwa (religious edict) pronounced against him by Ayatollah Khomeini, supreme Muslim leader at that time, for blasphemy. Rushdie is currently Distinguished Writer in Residence at Emory University. The novel is a marvelously erudite study of good and evil, a feast of language, and a rollicking comic fable. The book begins with two Indians, Gibrell Farishta (movie star) and Saladin Chamcha (Bombay expatriate), plummeting from the sky (and surviving) after the explosion of their jetliner, and proceeding through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations.
Interested visitors should call host Judy Goldman (385-5222).

Monday, March 17. June Bug’s Grocery and the Cornfield Jook: a South Albany Oral History, by Mary Sterner Lawson (Faculty and Friends of FSU member). This oral history by Lawson, a former professor of art history and an artist, came about because of a public showing of her nostalgic painting, based on her 1985 photos of an old grocery and jook joint destroyed in southwest Georgia’s catastrophic 1994 flood. Lawson was encouraged to capture the stories from this small African American community and taped over 40 stories, which culminated in the publication of this book. The book cover is her painting of the jook joint.
Please call host Carmen Nelson (576-2521) for meeting details.
