PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Since this will be our last newsletter for this year, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped make this an enjoyable, fun year. The Board has been easy to work with and very conscientious. The interest group chairpersons have done an excellent job, and all groups are going well. We have all enjoyed the Club events, and thank you to all the people who were in charge and helped with each event. Special thanks to Beth Charness and Barb Elam, past presidents, who have been my right and left arms. All of the Board and Interest Group Chairpersons will be listed and introduced at the Annual Dinner on April 16. Please make your reservations and plan to attend our last monthly event of this year.
The Film School Tour & Social event was enjoyed by the 50 people, who attended it. Our film school is one of the top three film schools in the nation. Last year, their movie “Rundown” received a 2007 Gold Student Academy Award. You could feel the pride of everyone to whom we talked. Thank you Carol Weissert and Britt Poulson for co-chairing this event.
I hope that you have had a chance to look at our web site http://facultyclub.fsu.edu. It is now current thanks to our College of Information intern Will Burns and his supervisor Dr. Jane Barrager.
Again, plan on attending our Annual Dinner on April 16. (See included article). I am looking forward to visiting with you at this event.
Thank you again for being such a special group.
Joannie Poulson

Interest Groups Information for April, May & Summer
Book Discussion Group
Monday, April 21 – 7:30 p.m.
The Summer before Dark by Doris Lessing (winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature).
A London housewife, no longer needed as a caregiver for her children and husband, finds herself with a summer on her own, and travels abroad, resulting in profound changes in her life. Widely considered Lessing’s most artful exploration of her major themes — the relationship of self and society, intelligence vs. feeling, madness or mental health, and above all, the role of modern woman
— this book is beautifully written.

Flights of Loveby Bernhard Schlink (author of The Reader)
This book is a mesmeric collection of stories about love. In his characteristically unsentimental, elegant and spare prose, Schlink unveils characters and relationships haunted by betrayal and guilt, in situations where self-examination is inescapable. He shows love in a variety of themes: as desire, as self-betrayal, etc. Through his beguiling language, he examines the universal desire for a lasting, loving relationship, however difficult it is to find.

Saturday April 12 – noon
Surf fishing trip at St. George Island with preliminary instructions by Ernie Rehder.
The Outdoors Explorers will meet at noon at the first shelter/picnic pavilion inside St. George Island State Park on the Gulf side off the right hand side walkway with admission into the park at about $5 per car.
Ernie Rehder has offered to be our able instructor. He has forwarded the following information for this fun and hopefully productive trip. Contact Ernie at erehder@fsu.edu or at 385-4016 or 567-0706 (cell phones do not always work on the island) to see who is planning to attend and to maybe join in on some of the items listed below. The number is limited to 20 participants.
Bring:
— fishing rod and reel if you have one; if not, purchase combo (for example, something with a model 33 Zebco reel = $20 for rod and reel). If you bring your own, try to have at least a12 lb. test line.
— rod holder that can be stuck in sand (for sale at Walmart etc, about $5). Or you can use PVC piping; cut it at a sharp angle at one end)
— a knife or nail clipper to cut line.
— small cooler with ice, one that you can carry with one hand
— fresh (but not live—very expensive!) smallish shrimp, at least 1 lb. Good place to get it is Fisherman’s Choice in Eastpoint, close to left turn to St. George Island.
— wear shorts or cut-offs so you can wade close to shore
— whatever else you may need for day at the beach: bathing suit, sunscreen, hat, sandwich, drinks (but no alcohol allowed in Park). There are bathrooms, water fountain and cold-water showers at the pavilion area.
— Ernie can supply the hooks and other items that go on the end of the line
— Important: no fishing license required as long as you are fishing from the shore or something (a pier) attached to land
fyi: place to find the tides, by location and date. Between low and high is best: http://www.saltwatertides.com/cgi-local/floridagulf
Contact Dot and Jim Skofronick at 222-8544 or by e-mailing them at dsjs@embarqmail.com if you are interested to learn more about the possible May trip to Dog Island.

Investment Club
Bill Claggett is the new Senior Partner of FFUIC. They might be able to accept a new member or two in the fall but it would probably need to be someone with some experience in an investment club or a lot of enthusiasm for the task. Each member is assigned at least one stock to be followed and reported on at each meeting. They also meet in subgroups between meetings to look for new investment opportunities. Contact Bill Claggett at wjclaggett@fsu.edu for more information about this interest group.
A great big thank you from the Book Discussion Group
In honor of Maxine Weiss, and to thank her for her many years of service as the Interest Group Chairperson, the Book Discussion Group members recently collected money to present her with a gift. However, at her request, they are making a donation in her name to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU scholarship fund. Maxine commented that since she didn’t need “a thing,” she wanted to do this to help students instead. Thanks so much, Maxine! We love you!
Fernando Tesón writes:
It is my pleasure to invite you to the recital of my group, Tango Sur. The recital will take place on Saturday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the Dohnanyi Recital Hall in the FSU College of Music. Admission is free. The recital is entitled: Tango: Tradition and Renewal, and it will be truly special. We have new repertoire, including the world premiere of a piece written especially for Tango Sur!
Hope to see you there, and bring as many friends as you can, thanks!
