April 2009 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy April to everyone. I hope to see you all at the final FSU Faculty and Friends Club event on Saturday April 25th. On that day we will have our first annual Spring Luncheon at Cypress—a fitting way to end our year’s programming. Please join us at 11:30 for lunch and a presentation by Bob Crew, FSU Political Science Professor and author of the upcoming book Jeb Bush and a Conservative Revolution on Florida. Bob’s talk is entitled “Assessing the Governorship of Jeb Bush: Looking Back and Possibly Ahead.”
The cost of the lunch is $20. Please send a check to Cal Zongker by Wednesday April 22nd. His address is 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312. If you haven’t been to Cypress Restaurant, you should take this opportunity to treat yourself. If you are a fan of Cypress, I know you’ll want to come to this special event. Cypress is located at 320 East Tennessee Street (corner of Tennessee and Gadsden). You can also check out reviews and awards at the restaurant’s website: http://www.cypressrestaurant.com.
At the lunch, we will also induct our new officers for 2009-2010: Pat Meredith, President; Peter Cottrell, Vice-president, Programs; Fred and Annelise Leysieffer, 2nd Vice-presidents, Membership; Ruth Pryor, Recording Secretary; Denise Ellingson, Corresponding Secretary; and Calvin Zongker, Treasurer. This is a wonderful slate of officers who will provide dynamic leadership to our group over the coming year. Thanks to Joannie Poulson and her committee for their excellent work in putting together this slate.
This is my opportunity to thank all of you for your participation in the Faculty and Friends Club this year. Our events have been stellar thanks to Pat Meredith and her committees. Our membership is strong and our economic and non-economic indicators are sound. I hope to see everyone in April at the spring luncheon.

Vivaldi’s Virgins by Barbara Quick. They are meeting at the home of Ursula Morgan. Please call her at 422-3503 for address and directions. Ursula Morgan will be leading the discussion.
“Quick recreates 18th century Venice at the height of its splendor and decadence. A story of longing and intrigue, half-told truths and toxic lies, Vivaldi’s Virgins unfolds through the eyes of Anna Maria dal Violin, one of the elite musicians cloistered in the foundling home where Antonio Vivaldi¬, known as the Red Priest of Venice, ¬is maestro and composer… ” Quick uses well-researched historical detail, exquisite poetic language, and even Dante’s letters to his beloved Beatrice.
