January 2009 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings from high in the Colorado Rockies! As I write this, it’s snowing outside and we are looking forward to a truly White Christmas with our family group of fourteen. As we enter another year of exciting activities with the Faculty & Friends club of FSU, I want to again urge you all to encourage younger faculty and friends to join us. Mike and I send our best wishes to you and yours for the Holiday Season and wish you all good health and prosperity in 2010.

We challenge you to join us for our 26th Annual Bowlegs 5K Scholarship Race to benefit returning, undergraduate students at FSU. As this is our only fundraiser besides your donations sent with your membership, do come walk or run with us before heading across the street to the Seminole Clubhouse for a delicious and congenial brunch in the Renegade Grill. The Brunch is free to Faculty Club members, who are either race participants or volunteers. The cost for Club members and others, who do not wish to participate in the race, we hope you will instead plan to attend the Brunch at $7.00 per person, which together with all other proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund. We are in great need of extra funds this year as Lucy Ho is the only major sponsor. We are also in need of volunteers to help direct traffic for the runners. If interested in volunteering, or should you need fliers, please call Annelise Leysieffer at 893-1272 or e-mail her at aleysieffer@gmail.com

Chinese New Year at Lucy Ho’s AZU

3220 Apalachee Parkway

The Year of the Tiger

Sunday, February 7
Time and cost TBA
Come celebrate the Chinese New Year with delectable dishes especially prepared for the members of the Faculty & Friends Club. This popular annual event will be taking place at AZU, Lucy Ho’s new restaurant. It is located on the left side of Apalachee parkway when coming from Capital Circle about halfway between Capital Circle and Wal-Mart in the Big Oak Shopping Center diagonally across from where Scan House used to be. Being a smaller restaurant, Lucy Ho has offered to close the restaurant to other customers for that evening, so plan to come and enjoy her delicious dishes in a pleasant atmosphere. Additional information with time, deadline and cost will be sent via e-mail as well as in the next newsletter.
Our Annual Holiday Party at Dorothy B. Oven Park on December 5 was a huge success with at least 100 people attending. We thank Barbara Elam and Diane Stuart for their excellent planning and hard work and thank their committee and other members for providing such delicious and plentiful food and beverages. We thank Neil Charness for taking so many great pictures and thank Beth Charness for posting them. Arrangements have already been made to host the event there next year on Saturday, December 4, 2010. We also thank Pete Cottrell for planning the excellent tour of the WFSU-TV and Radio Station on November 14.

Beverages can be purchased by us individually in the Hall. More information about meeting time will be sent via e-mail as well as in the next newsletter.

Join us for a (BYO) picnic lunch at the Forest Visitor Center, at 12:30 p.m. for lunch or by 1:00 p.m. to start the hike.  The itinerary will include two hiking options. For those wishing a short, easy walk, there is a paved 0.8 mile (round trip) “Living Forest Trail” – a highlight is the presence of “Talking” trees, which tell you all about themselves! Or add on the looped “Ravine Trail” which continues from the Living Forest trail to circle a small lake and Steephead ravines for another 1.4 miles (2.2 miles in total). This trail is moderately strenuous with some ups and downs.  The trees don’t talk, but many are informatively labeled with regard to identity and interesting characteristics.
Contact Barbara Elam at 385-9856 by January 20 for directions and to let her know you are planning to attend.
