April 2010 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends, I find it difficult to believe that “Springtime Tallahassee”, in all senses of the word, has come round again, which means that we are approaching the end of yet another academic year at the University, and also the year’s end for our Club. This year has passed very quickly, but we have spent some great times together. Thank you for having me as your President, and please join me in welcoming Pete Cottrell as our President for 2010-2011.
Pat Meredith
We have had some excellent, fun-filled and interesting events throughout the academic year. We want to thank the board members, the interest group chairs and the event chairs for all their hard work as well as thanking all who have provided delicious refreshments to a number of our events. The interest groups have been well attended and continue to provide enjoyable evenings such as Barbara & John Elam’s Gourmet Sampler in February with a Mardi Gras theme with more than 50 members attending. Many dressed in festive costumes as can be seen in the accompanying photos. The other photos are from our Valentine’s Dance with Bill Landing playing the saxophone and of Lucy & John Ho at the annual Chinese New Year’s dinner at their new restaurant AZU.

This year, our Annual Spring Luncheon will again be held at the popular Cypress Restaurant at 320 East Tennessee Street. We look forward to an interesting presentation by Dr. Harper, an Assistant Professor in History at FSU. She has a fascinating and varied background with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, a master’s degree in meteorology and oceanography as well as a Ph.D. in history of science. Besides her degrees, Dr. Harper is a retired Navy meteorologist and oceanographer, having served in
Spain (twice), in Iceland as well as aboard ship doing deep-ocean survey in the equatorial Atlantic. She has also been stationed in the Continental US and Hawaii. Dr Harper writes that “Her talk is a fun story about what happened in Washington State when the wheat growers hired people to “make rain” and the cherry farmers hired folks to “stop rain” at the same time and on the same patch of land.”
The $23.00 includes starter, main course, dessert, tea or coffee, tax and gratuity. Please let Pat Meredith know whether you prefer to have Stir Fried Beef or Grilled Shrimp or if you prefer a vegetarian plate instead. Patrons may park across the street in the (now closed) Cuban restaurant lot, but there will also be valet parking at no charge. Please forward your check for $23.00 per person, made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to Pat Meredith, 744 Duparc Circle, Tallahassee, FL 32312. Call her at 531-0839 if you have any questions.
