President’s Message
Welcome to the 85th year of the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU. Our organization has been serving the FSU community since 1926! We have grown from mainly a group of faculty spouses to plan social events, such as welcoming new faculty, to a now full functioning association of all faculty (retired or active), their spouses and friends, with regularly scheduled social activities, as well as fund-raising activities to provide scholarships for returning students at the university.
One of the strengths of our organization is the large selection of activities we offer to our members. I thank those who have served as chairpersons of various interest groups for their continuous generosity and leadership through all these years. We truly could not be where we are without you in making these interest groups working like clockwork. I thank our most recent past president, Pete Cottrell, for all his hard work and making this transition easy for me to take over. I thank all the board members for volunteering their time in numerous brainstorming and planning sessions to keep the club going. We want Annelise and Fred Leysieffer to know that they are very much appreciated for all these many years of volunteer work. Annelise has particularly given so much devotion, time and energy! Our group activities are always in her agenda even as she was having both of her knees replaced at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. I know this would put a smile in everybody’s face. By witnessing this very moving experience with Annelise, I cannot help but be inspired. Annelise’s passion to keep the club going inspired all of us to give our best in growing this wonderful club that was started by our club members over 85 years ago!
Several interest groups run year round. We offer interest groups that are truly worthwhile for you or your friends to join. They are all chaired and assisted by wonderful members. A new Digital Photography Group is currently being formed, and if you can think of a new interest group that may attract existing and new members to sign up, please send me the suggestion, and we will surely discuss it at our next meeting. Membership dues are low, and we offer tremendous fun, educational value through interest groups and the opportunity to be with people with varied experiences and skills to share.
Not only do we have these interest groups that are worth joining, we have receptions and group tours like we just had this past year. We have our traditional Fall Reception, this year held at the Brokaw-McDougall House, and the Annual Christmas Holiday reception at the Dorothy B. Oven Park. We will dine at Azu during the Chinese New Year celebration and participate in the fund-raising Billy Bowlegs 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk. Last year, we toured the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Goodwood Museum and Gardens. I had fun at the Mardi Gras party held at the Elam’s house and at the Halloween party held at Neil and Beth Charness’ home.
I would also like to thank Calvin Zongker for again taking over as our dedicated treasurer as well as thank the many board members, who continue to work hard for this wonderful organization. There are so many devoted members all through these years who have remained active in volunteering their time and continued support. Thank you all again – to those who have contributed. You know who you are, as I could not mention you all.
Our membership needs to grow. Please try to get faculty or friends of FSU to join. It is such a great feeling to belong to such a wonderful organization. It would not take much. If every member can just bring one friend to one of our activities, or interest group meetings, together, we can accomplish a lot in recruiting new members.
I am privileged and honored to be your president. I understand that the tenure of my service is only a year as your vice president and another year as president, but the memories will linger on for as long as I live. I shall look forward to working with Jan Flake, our incoming Vice President, who will be in charge of our programs. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. Again, I welcome each and every one of you, and I wish you all a very happy and productive year.
Sincerely, Josephine Ang
SCHOLARSHIP
The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986. (At the request of the FSU Foundation, the name of the fund remains as stated here.) Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Four years ago, the board members voted to also add some partial scholarships to part-time students. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful, annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk, we have been able to award one-hundred-and-fifteen scholarships during the past sixteen years. We will be giving six $600 scholarships this fall semester with more in the spring and hope we can continue to count on your support for this worthwhile endeavor. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted. Please mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the Treasurer, Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.

Come savor the delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts, in part prepared by members. Please bring new faculty and friends and encourage current faculty to attend the reception to familiarize them with our organization. Also come meet and welcome our scholarship recipients.
