August 2014 Newsletter

President’s Message
I hope everyone is having a nice summer, and is looking forward to an exciting and fun-filled 2014-15 year with the Faculty and Friends Club. We have lots of activities planned for this year, starting with the Welcoming Reception on October 1 at the Tallahassee Garden Center. I would like to encourage everyone to attend this function and to bring a guest who may be interested in joining. Three years ago, Annelise invited Bob and me to attend, and we have been enjoying the activities and all the friends we have made since joining the group.
I also would like to encourage everyone to consider volunteering to help out with some of the Interest Groups. Some of the chairs are resigning after many years of service, and some chairs would like help in running activities.  Please say “yes” if you are asked to help!
I look forward to seeing you all at the reception, and hearing about everyone’s summer adventures!
Linda Clickner
Please make sure to keep the central section of this newsletter as it serves as the yearbook for the year. Current and updated information will be printed in the regular newsletters and will also and preferably be sent to all who provide your membership VP and Annelise with e-mail addresses.

Alice B. Nichols Scholarship
The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986. Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students, who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Seven years ago, the board members voted to also add some partial scholarships to part-time students. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful, annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk, we have been able to award close to 150 scholarships during the past 19 years. We are in the process of choosing the students for the fall semester. Full-time students will receive $500-600. We hope to meet them at the Fall Reception. We thank you for your generous support and hope we can continue to count on you for this worthwhile endeavor particularly during these difficult economic times. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged. Please bring your check to the Welcoming Reception on October 1 or mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the treasurer, Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.

Annual Welcoming Reception
Wednesday, October 1 – – 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Tallahassee Garden Center
507 North Calhoun Street
As always, we start the year with our Annual Welcoming Reception to take place once again in the Tallahassee Garden Center located between North Calhoun and North Gadsden Streets. You can enter the large parking area either from Carolina Street across from Georgia Belle or from North Gadsden Street. There is a ramp at the back of the house for easy access. This event is a wonderful opportunity to visit with old and new friends. Come savor the delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts, in part prepared by members. You can join or renew your membership and sign up for the many fascinating interest groups. These groups are a great way to get to know each other, and they serve as the mainstay of our Club. Please bring new faculty and friends and encourage current faculty to attend the reception to familiarize them with our organization. Also come meet and welcome our scholarship recipients.
If you have special delicacies, finger foods or desserts you would like to share with us, it will be much appreciated. Please e-mail our Vice President Dian LaTour at dlatour@fsu.edu or call her at 907-0512 with offers to bring food, to volunteer or if you have any questions. Please make sure to bring serving platters and utensils with your finger foods. The Garden Center imposes a rental fee per chair. While we will have some rental chairs available, we are asking willing members to bring some of their own. This request is made in an effort to limit our expenses and to keep our annual dues low. Please let Dian know if you are able to bring chairs.
