March & April 2015

We must thank our president Linda Clickner and her husband Bob for hosting the delightful and extremely well attended Mardi Gras on Saturday, February 21. Their house was beautifully decorated throughout, and most members arrived festively dressed for the evening. Go to our website and look at the great event photos taken by Neil Charness. Thanks to all for bringing food and making this evening such a delightful one for all.
We had originally planned to meet Tuesday, March 17 at the American Legion Hall for St. Patrick’s Day. Since so many cannot attend, we will not be going as a group, but by all means go dance there any Tuesday evening or simply go enjoy listening to the music.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the next Club event, which is the Annual Spring Luncheon. This delightful lunch will again be held at Golden Eagle on Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m. Look for more information about cost and entertainment in a later message.
This Monday evening March 16 at 7:30 p.m., the Book discussion group will discuss “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert. The group will be meeting at Cecilia Keller’s house at 7:30 p.m. Please check with Kea Herron at kea.snuffy@gmail.com if you need more information.
On Monday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m., the group will be discussing “Wet Works” by our own Donna Meredith and is hosted by Donna. Donna’s book is excellent.
The German group Sprechen Sie Deutsch? usually meets the third Friday, which is March 20. Please check with Toni Fuss Kirkwood-Tucker at tkirkwoodtucker@comcast.net for more information.
Next Saturday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m., Barbara & Pete Cottrell are inviting us to their house for Gourmet Sampler to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Their house is at 3062 Shamrock Street North. If you don’t usually attend this group, please be aware that we all bring either an appetizer or dessert and bring our own wine or beer with non-alcoholic drinks provided by the host. Please be sure to let Pete know if you plan to attend to his email rhinopete@mac.com

Scholarship update for Spring 2015. Three of our eight scholarship recipients from the fall graduated in December. The remaining five students have been awarded scholarships for a total of $2050. The amounts for spring vary, depending upon number of credits. These awardees are often working while taking classes, some full time, and many have families. They are all extremely grateful for our financial help. We thank all who have graciously donated to this wonderful cause, and again thank Larry Giunipero and Bill Hillison for working so diligently together with me with the Bowlegs Race to add to the funds collected each year for this wonderful and worthwhile cause. Without their dedication, the race would not be such a success each year for the past 31 years.
Best regards to all at this beautiful time of the year with the trees and bushes opening up with such speed now that spring has arrived.
