January 2019 Newsletter

President’s Message – Happy New Year!!!
I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season, and I thank you for all your help at our great Holiday Party. Members of the Faculty and Friends Club had a great year in 2018, and we are looking forward to another good one in 2019! As seen on this page, plans are well underway for the spring semester. We hope to see you at many, if not at all, of these events and at the various interest group gatherings. We thank our wonderful hosts who continue to host monthly events and to the many others, who offer their homes for the various interest group meetings.
Thanks to your contributions, the scholarship program continues to be successful. We awarded seven $600 scholarships for the Fall 2018 semester, with five of those students continuing this spring. This brings the total amount of scholarships to returning students to more than 210 since 1994. This program depends on the proceeds from the Billy Bowlegs run/walk and on your contributions. Again we truly thank you and thank our major sponsors Alison & Mark Riley with Sunshine State Tax & Accounting Services and Asker Food distributors. We must also thank Larry Giunipero and Bill Hillison for joining me in co-chairing this event for all these years. Without their dedication, we would not be able to award so many scholarships each year to these deserving students.

Please support our Bowlegs Sponsors
We much appreciate Alison & Mark Riley as our major sponsor through Alison’s company Sunshine State Tax & Accounting Services, LLC.
Sunshine State Tax & Accounting Services, LLC provides quality, personalized financial guidance to local individuals and businesses as well as clients throughout the world. Sunshine State Tax & Accounting Services, LLC’s long standing expertise ranges from basic tax management and accounting services to more in-depth services such as tax and financial planning. Alison and her company have over 20 years of experience helping people with international connections such as FSU faculty, staff, post-doctoral researchers, and students; and accordingly they are a trusted tax resource for the FSU Center for Global Engagement.
Last year, we got another new sponsor. Asker Distributors, Inc delivers frozen foods such as gourmet ice cream and pizza in North Florida and to other nearby areas.
We are grateful to Lucy Ho and her family for providing us with a number of gift certificates. Do visit her their three restaurants, Azu, located at 3220 Apalachee Parkway, Masa, located at 1650 North Monroe Street and Dao located at Bannerman Crossings. All are popular venues for delicious Sushi, Chinese, Japanese and Southern Asian Style Cuisines. Lucy Ho’s Hospitality Group recently opened another new restaurant called Café Taverna at 1019 N. Monroe Street, serving “Southern American cuisine with a Latin twist.”
The general manager of the local Jimmy John’s franchises is again providing us with many coupons for free subs. Do frequent their restaurants around town and taste their delicious sandwiches.
Make sure to visit Hopkins Eatery, our newest sponsor. This is a local chain with three restaurants in Tallahassee. The owners provide us with numerous gift certificates to use on healthy meals.
