NOVEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Faculty and Friends Club members and participants,

Now that the dust has settled on the election, it is time to enjoy the benefits of the Faculty and Friends Club of Florida State University. Dinners, book clubs, foreign language groups, day-trips, holiday parties, educational outings are only a few of the offerings for 2008-2009.

But like the biannual call for funding for our terrific local public radio stations, I’d like to remind you that we need your paid membership. And, like public radio, it is a bargain. For a scant $20 per household ($15 for retirees) you get to enjoy a myriad of opportunities for learning and fun. I’d like to issue a special challenge to those of you who are active in the club’s interest groups. We’d like you to join other club events—and join the club.

The dues go for a worthwhile cause—scholarships for FSU students, targeted to those 30 years or older. Last fall we gave four scholarships; three of the four were able to come to our September reception. In the spring we’ll give more scholarships to deserving students.

So for our scholarships, our club, and for yourselves, please join the FSU Faculty and Friends Club soon. It is easy—just send a check to our treasurer: Calvin Zongker, 610 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312-2334.

Hope to see you at an F&FC event soon.

Johanna Dinkelman and Ruth Pryor, as Snowball, Hemingway’s six-toed cat, stole the show at our festive Halloween Party at the home of Beth & Neil Charness. We thank them for welcoming us into their beautiful home.

& Lunch at Fresh Foods

Meet us in the National Weather Service Office in the West Wing of the Love Building on the 4th floor. There is parking on Palmetto Way outside the Love Building. Irv Watson, the Science and Operations Officer of the NWS Tallahassee, will meet us there for a general overview. We will then break into smaller groups for a tour.  Irv is one of our members and tells us they are always happy to host a group; the visit should be informative and fun. After the tour, anyone interested is welcome to continue on for lunch at the newest campus dining room, Fresh Foods, located on Call Street across from the Medical School and next to the Stone Building at about 11:30 a.m. The lunch buffet is $7.50 per person, all you can eat, and you pay as you enter. If you plan to attend the visit and/or lunch, please call Pat Meredith at 531-0839, or Ruth Pryor at 531-0609 for more information. Ruth has a DVD documentary from the A&E History Channel entitled, “Isaac’s Storm.” This is an account of the devastating hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas in 1900. A special showing of this movie is being planned at the Meredith’s house on Sunday evening November 23, the day after the visit to the Weather Center. More information will be provided at the tour.
