President’s Message

We are pleased to welcome all of our new members to The Faculty and Friends Club. How very fortunate we were that the weather cooperated with us at the Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 Mile Walk that brought out 120 eager participants on that beautiful sunny morning. The major fund-raiser for our scholarship fund brought in $1,632 this year. We are grateful to all of our members who volunteered their time to be part of Billy Bowlegs. Particularly, we thank Larry Giunipero and Bill Hillison for organizing and carrying out the race again for so many years. The brunch at the Renegade Grill that followed the race was a highpoint of the day. Because of the active involvement of our membership and of the Gulf Winds Track Club, we are proud to give out seven scholarships this 2006-2007 school year. Again, Annelise Leysieffer outdid herself by managing to organize this very worthwhile event, despite the fact that she was right in the middle of her PhD defense preparation. Congratulations to Dr. Annelise Leysieffer for successfully defending her thesis on February 1.
John and Lucy Ho graciously opened up their main dining room to us for the Ninth Annual Chinese New Year. It was decided at a board meeting last year to honor John and Lucy for the warm hospitality that they have extended to our group in preparing these wonderfully varied menus from year to year. The atmosphere that they create is always very warm and welcoming to our group, with the dining room filled to capacity this year, as always. Lucy and John have contributed so much to our Faculty and Friends Club and to the FSU community at large, that we were so pleased to be able to thank them for all that they have done.
The year is flying by, with the tour of the Claude Pepper Museum coming up very shortly, on Saturday, February 24 at 10 am followed by lunch in the Suwannee Room at 11:30 am. With a political career spanning over forty years, exhibits in the museum dramatically portray Claude Pepper’s personal and political experiences, beginning from his early childhood experiences as a farmer growing up in rural Alabama to his final role as an advocate of the aged. On Saturday afternoon, March 31, we can look forward to celebrating the 60th anniversary of the FSU Flying High Circus with Beth Haskins as our honored guest. While you are writing important dates down on your calendar, don’t forget about the Annual Dinner, Wednesday. April 18, taking place at an exciting new location this year: The Silver Slipper.

CLAUDE PEPPER MUSEUM VISIT AND SUWANNEE ROOM LUNCH
FEBRUARY 24 – 10:00 a.m.
We will be having a tour of the Claude Pepper Museum on Saturday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m., meeting in the front lobby of the museum. Afterwards, we will go to the Suwannee Dining Room for a buffet lunch (pay for own) around 11:30. A section of the main room will be reserved for us so that we can all eat together. This should be another special event that you won’t want to miss. We need your reservation by noon Tuesday, February 20. That will be our cut-off date. Brooks takes the well-known story of Alcott’s Little Women and weaves a tale centering on the absentee father and husband, Peter March. Inspired by the abolitionist movement, he becomes a preacher, marries Marmee, and has four daughters. When the Civil War begins, he enlists in the Union army and soon becomes attached to a hospital unit. His high ideals are continually thwarted, not only by the times but by his own ineptitude.

Tango Sur, Tallahassee’s one and only tango band, will offer a very special recital in Dohnanyi Hall, FSU school of Music, Thursday, February 15, at 8:00 pm. Admission is free. The recital is entitled “A Tribute to Astor Piazzolla”. We will perform the music of this great Argentine master who single-handedly revolutionized tango music in the second half of the twentieth century. Piazzolla, who died in 1992, is today admired and respected well beyond Argentina. His music is truly original and beautiful. I want to cordially invite all of you and thank you in advance for your support.
