October 2006 Newsletter

President’s message

Following up from our last newsletter we are happy to report that the interest groups, which are the backbone of our club, have gotten off to a fine start thanks to the hard working interest group chairpersons. They have put a lot of thought into their programs and I wish there were more space for me to comment on each and every one of them. You may want to consider broadening your horizons and join a few more interest groups.

There are three dates in the ’06 calendar that you should mark in your date book, which include October 28th, November 12th, and December 9th.

Dress up in your favorite costume or come as you are to Barbara and John Elam’s house for a fun filled Halloween Party on October 28th. A visit to San Luis Mission on November 12th takes you back in time to a community where the Apalachee Indians and newcomers from Spain lived together side by side. You will see reconstructed 17th century buildings and meet people going about the tasks that sustained life centuries ago. This 60-acre archaeological site represents the largest and most diverse collection of 17th century life available anywhere. It is a very special place where history comes to life. The Holiday Happening is on December 9th, when we will celebrate the winter holidays of Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza and the New Year at the home of Yvonne and Homer Ooten.

We are thrilled that 2/3 of our members have already paid their dues, which of course leaves 1/3 of you out there who haven’t taken the time to send in your checks to Calvin Zongker. Just take a minute right now and fill out the membership form attached to this newsletter. If you have forgotten whether or not you are paid up for 2006 just take a look at your newsletter to see if there is an ’06 after your name on the mailing label.

The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Host: Bonnie Armstrong, 2883 N. Hannon Hill Dr. (893-6141)

Discussion leader: Kathleen Rose

This best-selling Spanish novel, set in Barcelona, is full of mystery and a fascinating cast of characters. The story centers around a rare, old novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julian Carax. The narrator, Daniel, intrigued with the book, begins to investigate the life and death of Carax. What secrets do the people he meets hide? Why is a horribly disfigured man, identifying himself as a character in the old novel, trying to burn every copy? What draws Daniel into relationships with the other characters?
