August 2006 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

With fall right around the corner, we can look forward to cooler weather and some very exciting new programs planned by Joannie Poulson, Barbara Elam and me. They include attending the dress rehearsal of the FSU’s 60th Anniversary of the Flying Circus with Mrs. Haskins as our special guest, a visit to San Luis Mission, and a tour of the Claude Pepper Museum with brunch following the event.

We were thrilled to get the Alumni Center Ballroom again this year for our Annual Joint Welcoming Reception and Newcomers Party to be held September 8th. Two days before that on September 6th at the Tallahassee Little Theater is the FSU International Center Benefit Night with a terrific Neil Simon play “45 Seconds from Broadway”. Those who have attended in previous years enjoyed the international cuisine and amazing prizes offered in the silent auction.

Other programs to look forward to in 2006 include: the Halloween Party at Barbara and John Elam’s home on October 28th, and the Holiday Happening on December 9th at the home of Homer and Yvonne Ooten. Make sure you mark your calendars now.

This year we are pushing for new members and hope to recruit some of them at the New Faculty Luncheon to be held at the Turnbull Center on August 22nd headed by the very capable Liz Payer. We are asking everyone in the club to help bring new people to our events or interest groups. If everyone could bring just one person or a couple to our programs, we could increase our membership in no time. Of course we want “real members” who pay their dues, so we have money to keep our club up and running.

The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 (the name of the fund remains unchanged). Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 mile Walk, the Club has been able to award sixty-nine scholarships during the past eleven years. We are planning to award six or seven more during the next academic year. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged. Please mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the treasurer Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.

Joint Fall Welcoming & Newcomers Reception

Friday, September 8 – 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Alumni Center Ballroom

1030 West Tennessee Street

We are starting our year with the annual Reception, which is an opportunity to visit with old and new friends. You can join or renew your membership ($20/$15 for retirees [per household]), and sign up for an interest group. Interest groups are a great way to get to know each other, because the groups are usually smaller. We will be giving out our three scholarships, and the Dean of Faculties, Anne Rowe, will say a few words. President Wetherell will be giving his State of the University Speech at 3:30 p.m. at the Medical Building, and our group has been given an invitation to anyone who might want to attend. After the speech, proceed to our reception. We will have wine and beer, sponsored by Westcott Lakes, and delicious hors d’oeuvres and lemonade prepared by some of our members.

Beth Charness, Liz Payer, Joannie Poulson and Jan Thomas are chairing this event. Please call Joannie at 385-8028 with any questions and/or offers of food.
