March 2006 Newsletter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As my year as club president is nearing its close, I must say I have been delighted with the many new adventures I have experienced with the Faculty and Friends Club. I have attended many different interest groups and have met many wonderful people for the first time. We have a dynamic group of people, and I have found by attending these different groups the remarkable diversity of interesting activities our club members enjoy.

The nominating committee met in January, and we have come up with a slate of nominees for 2006-2007. I want to thank Dot Skofronick for doing a great job as nominating committee chair. We were able to accomplish getting a slate with just two meetings.  Thank you Virginia Grigg for hosting our meetings. You were a delightful hostess, and I look forward to meeting with you again next year.

We are looking for ideas for our monthly programs for the 2006-2007 year. Please email me ble@neuro.fsu.edu with your suggestions. We will also hand out a questionnaire for programs at the annual dinner and include it in the April newsletter.

Come tour The College of Medicine on March 25 at 10:00 a.m. We will meet in the Lobby off Call Street. Dr. Andrew Payer and his wife Liz will be providing us with a tour of the facilities. This is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. Afterwards, we will have lunch at Fresh Food Company, which is just across the street. The Annual Dinner is taking place on April 20. This may be the last year we will have it in the Capital City Country Club Restaurant due to major changes at the golf course.

About the book: This intense biography/autobiography, based on four generations of women in Chang’s family, is not an easy read. The hardship, cruelty, and betrayal her family faces are shown, with riveting detail, as they personally experience the turmoil and chaos of China’s 20th century history. How the family survives, and how Chang herself becomes a successful professor and author, is the thread of hope throughout the book.
