PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I hope everyone had a rewarding and relaxing summer. I am happy to be back to participate in our wonderful events, and I hope you are too. Beth Charness, our Vice President for Programs, has planned superb upcoming monthly events for this year. Because some activities last year were so well received, they will be repeated this coming year.
Thanks to the special efforts of Annelise Leysieffer, we will be hosting the annual Fall Welcoming & Newcomers Reception at the newly opened Alumni Center. This site, at the former President’s residence, should be a wonderful place for the reception as it provides easy access and parking will not be a problem. Come join us in meeting new faculty and greeting old friends. If you have met new friends who would enjoy our club, please encourage them to come and let them know we have a variety of interest groups to meet everyone’s preferences.
As a special event this year, we will be honoring our past Presidents to show them our appreciation of their devotion and work for the Faculty and Friends Club of FSU (and all its previous titles). I am sure each and every one of the Presidents will say they could not have done the job without help of the board members and interest group chairs. Thanks to all.
I hope to see you September 2nd.
Barbara Elam
The University Club Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 (the name of the fund remains unchanged). Since 1994, the Club has been awarding one or more $500 scholarships per semester to needy, returning, full-time, undergraduate students who maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. Thanks to your generous donations and our successful annual Billy Bowlegs 5k Run and 1 mile Walk, the Club has been able to award sixty-three scholarships during the past eleven years. We are planning to award six more during the next academic year. Donations of any amount will be gratefully accepted and acknowledged. Please mail your donation together with your dues, with the check made out to the Faculty & Friends Club of FSU, to the treasurer Calvin Zongker, 601 Live Oak Plantation Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312.
“Because of pressing student needs last year, the club gave out an unprecedented seven $500 scholarships. That action left a deficit this year that we will have to overcome in order to resume our normal quota of three per semester. Hopefully, our members will respond to the challenge by adding extra dollars to their dues payment or by sending a check as a memorial to a deceased family member or friend.” Calvin Zongker

Gourmet Sampler will gather several times during the year, in a format similar to that of the Holiday Happening. Anyone interested in attending brings an hors d’oeuvre or dessert to share and their own beverage. Soft drinks are provided by the host. We would like to be able to have these get-togethers every few months if we can get enough people willing to host them. A sign- up sheet will be available at the Welcoming Reception. If you are unable to attend that but are interested in being a member of this group, please contact Denise Ellingson at 907-9992 or e-mail her at mdeniseel15@yahoo.com. Please title it as Faculty and Friends so Denise can identify it as something of note and not junk mail.
Please send contributions to the newsletter to Annelise Leysieffer at all9002@fsu.edu or call her at 893-1272.
