PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Fellow Members,
November is upon us with all the anticipation of Thanksgiving with the family ahead, and even Christmas shopping! The persistent seasonal catalogs are already filling our mailboxes despite the spiraling economy. During all the busy family activities, Tallahassee weather comes into its own in the pleasant Fall months, and I hope we can all benefit from the cool nights and warm sunny days and spend time outdoors. Our program chairs are ready with monthly interest group activities for us, and Pete Cotrell’s November event at the WFSU-TV and radio center promises a great day out on November 14th for us all.
Pat Meredith
We thank Pete Cottrell and his committee, as well as all who brought delicious refreshments, for the successful and well-attended Welcoming Reception in September, and we thank Beth & Neil Charness for again opening their beautiful home to host our festive Halloween Party. There were many great costumes with the youngest attendee being our 9-month-old grandson Christopher dressed as a tiny golfer attended by his grandparents as caddy and scorecard.
Our membership is growing nicely with more than 140 paid members and another 20 or so promised. We thank you. If you have yet to pay for the current academic year, please send your $20 ($15 for retirees) to Ed Schroeder, 806 Middlebrooks Circle, Tallahassee, FL 32312 and send any corrections and/or e-mail changes to Fred at fleysieffer@fsu.edu. With Embarq changing its name, please make sure to forward your new e-mail address either to Fred or to Annelise at aleysieffer@gmail.com
Take a Tour of WFSU-TV and Radio Station
1600 Red Barber Plaza
Near Innovation Park off of Pottsdamer Street
Saturday, November 14 – 10:00 a.m.
Followed by Lunch at Renegade Grill at 11:30 a.m.
At the Seminole Golf Golf Course Club House across from
FAMU/FSU College of Engineering
Please meet in the lobby. The tour will be broken up into groups of less than twenty, and each group will start at the same time but rotate around to the various locations. Although there is no firm deadline notification for either of Saturday’s events, an approximate head count would be helpful to both Mike Dunn, the Director of Productions and also to the Renegade Grill. Please let Pete Cottrell know about the tour by Wednesday evening November 11 either by calling him at 893-3870 or by e-mailing him at rhinopete@mac.com. For all who plan to eat at Renegade Grill afterwards, please let Barbara Elam know also by Wednesday evening either at 385-9856 or at ble@neuro.fsu.edu. Everybody pays for their own lunch.

Book Discussion Group – Monday, November 16 – 7:30 p.m.
White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
White Tiger won the Booker prize and is a fast read. The main character is a poor servant, Balram Halwai, who lives in a village in India. Through his compelling voice, we learn that he is both a murderer and a successful businessman. This book reveals modern India with its rich men, poor men, call centers, cockroaches, and prostitutes. Hosted by Pat Meredith (please call her for directions at 531-0839) with discussion led by Ava Okten.
Reminder: the Book Club is in the process of gathering suggestions for next year’s reads. Please either forward them to Sharon Hagopian at hagopian@hep.fsu.edu or to Betty Serow bettyserow@yahoo.com. They will need the category, (novel, nonfiction, poetry, etc.), the author, title and a short (intriguing) blurb. Also, page numbers help to “budget” reading time. Books should be paperback. You may want to review what our group has read through the years – website: http://facultyclub.fsu.edu – click on Interest Groups, then Book Club, and then the link to previous years.
