PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Friends and Club Members,
January has brought us a new year and a new decade to celebrate our University in activities and fellowship with members of the Faculty and Friends Club of FSU. Our President-Elect, Pete Cottrell, has all kinds of fun events planned for the rest of the academic year, including the Chinese New Year celebration, the Valentine’s Dance, the Ballgame and visit to the stadium, and then in April it will be time to wrap up the year’s business at our annual luncheon at the Cypress. The new decade brings a new University President to FSU, and we hope to entice Dr. and Mrs. Barron to attend some of these activities. Please be thinking about some group outings you would like to suggest to Pete and the Board for next year. Enjoy our glorious Florida sunshine as Spring comes on its way.

It is located on the left side of Apalachee parkway when coming from Capital Circle about halfway between Capital Circle and Wal-Mart in the Big Oak Shopping Center diagonally across from where Scan House used to be. The baseball stadium opens at 4:00 p.m., and the game with Georgia starts at 6:00 p.m. Those wishing to go to the game can purchase their tickets in advance and relax for a while either in the stadium or elsewhere. To all who are planning to tour the Moore Athletic Center please contact Pete Cottrell at rhinopete@mac.com or at 893-3870 by Wednesday, March 3. It would be a great idea to “tailgate” for this event so please contact Pete if you are interested in doing so in order for plans to be made accordingly. As there will not be another newsletter before the March event, please look for further updates via e-mail.
Membership Roster
Your roster is included with this newsletter. With the postal service no longer allowing any staples in their bulk mail, please staple it yourself. If you find errors in the roster or have changes to be made, please contact either Fred or Annelise Leysieffer at 893-1272 or at either fleysieffer@fsu.edu or at aleysieffer@gmail.com. We welcome the many new members to the Club and hope you will make good use of all the interesting and exciting activities we have to offer you.
Billy Bowlegs 5K & 1 Mile Walk Saturday, January 9
We want to thank all who participated and volunteered at the successful Billy Bowlegs 5k and 1 Mile Walk on that freezing cold morning two weeks ago, and we particularly want to thank Larry Giunipero and Bill Hillison for their dedication to raising funds for our scholarship. Larry has worked as the co-director ever since the first race, and Bill began not too many years after that. We had a great turnout of 100 cheerful runners and walkers including a large number of Club members. 42 enjoyed a delicious Brunch afterwards at Renegade Grill thanks to the Faculty Club. We thank the various members, who gave large donations to the scholarship fund, so despite having only one financial backer for the race, we still made $1,350.
Despite the temperatures hovering in the mid-20s with a brisk wind blowing, the sun was shining beautifully and, as can be seen in this photo, several of the front-runners were dressed in shorts.
Below are the names or our four scholarship recipients for the spring semester with only one full-time student this semester. Their expected graduation dates are shown in parentheses.
Max “Brian” Counts – Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (fall 2010)
Sheila Fretterd – Humanities (spring 2010)
Scott Hess) – Computer Science (fall 2010)
Claudia Willis – Spanish (spring or summer 2010)
We thank Alice Nichols and Diane Olsen for their hard and diligent work to ensure that we find worthy scholarship recipients.
New Named Scholarship
Since she became our scholarship chair in 1994, Alice Nichols has spent an incredible amount of hours year-round searching for needy, eligible, returning, undergraduate students. We generally get names from Financial Aid at FSU, but that is just part of the twice-yearly process. It is long overdue that we honor Alice with naming one of the yearly scholarships after her as the Alice Nichols Faculty & Friends Club Scholarship.
